B.C. Timber Resources.

Krom the Vancouver Lumberman and Contractor the
following interesting resume is taken of a bulletin of the
timber resources of the province issued by the Provincial
Bureau of Information: ;

The introductory table shows that there are in the
province 182,750,00u acres of timber land, the total for the
entire of Canada being 1,657,600,000 acres, this immense
area being almost equal to the combined timber acreage of
tie other timber countries of the wurld.

Next to her great treasury of minerals, the bulletin
points out, the most readily available, if not the must im-
portant of British Columbia’s natural resources is her
immense timber reserve. British Columbia may now be
raid to possess the greatest compact area of merchantable
timber on the North American continent, and though great
forest fires have raged in the interior in the yeara gone by
the coast districts possess the uwajor portion of the ch»ice
timber, and there, by reason of the dense growth and the
humidity of the climate, the ravages of fire have not had
any appreciable effect on the supply.

As far north as Alaska the coast is heavily timbered,
the forest line following the indents and river valleys and
fringing the mountain sides. Logging operations so far
have extended to Knight’s Inlet, a point on the coast of the
mainland opposite the north end of Vancouver Island.
Mere the Douglas fir, the most important and widely dis-
persed of the valuable trees, disappears altogether, and the
cypress, or yellow cedar, takes its place. North of this
cedar, hemlock and spruce are the principal timber trees.
It will be of interest to know that Douglas fir was named
ufter David Douglas, a noted botanist, who explored New
Caledonia in the early twenties of last century. It is a
very widely distributed tree, being found from the coast to
the summit of the Rocky Mountains, and as far east as
(‘algary and as far north as Fort McLeod. On the coast it
attains iramense proportions, is very high and clear of
imperfections, sometimes towering 800 feet in the air and
having a base circumference of from 30 to 50 feet. The
best averages, however, are 150 feet clear of limbs and five
to six feet in diameter. This is the staple timber of com-
merce, often classed by the trade as Oregon pine. It is
scientifically describedjjas standing midway between the
spruce and the balsam, and in the opinion of Professor
Macoun, the Dominion naturalist, is a valuable pulp-
making tree.

The Giant Arbor Vitae (cedar) is next to the Douglas
fir in importance in British Columbia, where it attains its
greatest size on Vancouver Island, along the coast and in
the lower parts of the rivers of the coast range. It is rarely
found in the dry interior of British Columbia, but is abuna-
unt in the river valleys on the slopes of the Selkirks and
Coast ranges. Though seldom found more than 150 feet
in height, in circumference it rivals the Douglas fir, trees
of from eight to ten feet in diameter not being rare, and
they are occasionally found much larger. It is chiefly used
in the manufacture of shingle, for which purpose it ia un-
equalled by any other wood. -

There are over 100 saw mills in the province, big and
small, with a combined daily capacity of over 2,000,000
feet, but this limit has never been reached, the annual cut
running between 300,000,000 and 350,000,000 feet. ‘The
acreage of timber under lease ia about 2,000 square miles,
and the total area of forest and woudland is estimated by
the Dominion statistician at 185,554 square miles, or 132,-
754,560 acres, but this must not be taken as all of the
present commercial value, as much of it is covered with
small trees, only fit for fuel and local lumber, which would
not be considered as “timber” by loggers, whose present
methods of selection are very destructive, as they choose
only the largest and best of the trees. In a few years from
now wheve timber by reason vf its scarcity elsewhere be-|
evmes more valuable, much that is now discarded by the|
timbermen will be gladly utilized, and in all probability,
old limits will be eut over several times

The dance given in the Windermere

United States Senator David Davie, of

and it probably will never quit going the
rounds of the prese: ‘‘Every veur every
local newepaper gives froin 500 to 5,000
free lines for the Lenefit of the commun-
ity in which it is located. No other
agency can or will do this. The edito:
in proportion to his means does more
jor h.e town than any other man. He
ought to be supported not because you
happen to like him or admire hie wiit
ing, but becanse a local paper is the best
juvestment a community can make. It
may not be crowded with great thought,
but financially, it ie of more benefit than

editors do more for less pay than any
man on earth, Patronize your home

Athalmer isa wide awake town theee
highte.

S. Langelles left last week for the
south, but will return in the spring.

Already the annual New Year's ball
to he held in the Athalmer Hali is being
talked of.

Several very large flocks of wild geese
passed directly over Wiluwer on Tuesday
flying southward.

An ozonogram says Athalmer ie all
right, all right, and occasivually $1,000
is seen on the ‘cable ’.

Lambert Bros. have put in the bridge
acrovs the Columbia river atthe Wilmer
landing. This year it ies floating bridge
that has been built and in future there
will be little trouble getting it in place
each fall.

R.S. Gallop on Nov. 15 reeorded at
the Mining Recorder’s offlee fuur years
aseessment work on the Acorn mineral
claim and two years’ work on the Gov
ernor, eituated on the Suuth Fork of
| Horee Thief creek.

“Twist your Lilly” is the name of an
old dance that is said to be the rage in
the east again. This dance will prob-
ably be introduced in this section before
long. The only trouble is, a fellow might
twist eome other fellow’s Lilly and get
thumped.

R. S. Gallop of Canterbury is building
a bridge acroes hhoree Thief creek near
where Bonlder creek empties. This wil!
give him eaev accers tothe eouth west-
ern portion of the 2,000-acre ranch he
purchased last summer. ‘Dick’’ is a
great Lustler and is one of our coming
millionaires.

Georgh Burt, Wilmer’s newest legal
light, has now proved hie ability to the
ealiefaction of his client, admirera and
self, and has once more @ought the qui

his admirers ought to induce him to j'in

While waiting for the boom that is
coming in the spring with the K. C. R.
The Outcrop would like to take in the
several hundred dollars due this office
Divided up this amounts to very little
individually, but, oh! how much they
mean to the editor who is endeavoring to

keep the sheriff ata respectable distance.

The Wilmer Presbyterian Sunday
school scholare were entertained by the
teachers with a party at Mise Snooks’
A splendid
lun heon was supplied, with plenty of
nuts and candy, Varions games were

played and the little folke all went home

On Friday Wm Wanupt appeared be-
fore E. J. Seovil, 8.M., on two charges
of stealing brought by the Ptarmigan
Mines. One charge was for stealing
eight corda of wood, valued at $157, froin
near the Iron Cap cabin and the other
for stealing 20 pieces of hewed timber
from the Farnham purchase. Mr.

Haupt has used the Iron Cap cabin off

and on since 1902, while working the

Tecumeaeh nine, and, therefore, Manager

Starbird of the Ptarmigen alleged that

he had stolen the wood which appeared
listed on an inventory of the thinge at
the Iron Cap when work was suspended
in November 1901. Haupt denied this
und said he had got all his wood from
off the government land, After a long
list of witnesses for the defence and one
| for the plaintiff had been examined the
/case was distnianed,
In the charge of stealing 20 pieces of
hewed timber it wae alleged one of Mr.
